Reflection: Editorial
Describe - This is a photo of Joseph Rodriguez as the bully physically grabbing the shirt of Allen Tanala in a tight grip because he doesn't "fit in" or doesn't have what he wants while Laurilyn V. sits on the floor on her laptop using a different method of bullying called cyber-bullying by using the internet to attack others with harsh words.
Interpret - For this assignment, in order to get the whole picture I had to crop the whole thing so it would focus on the subjects rather than the background although it's plain. I wanted it to look a little dimmer than it was originally because bullying is a dark subject to discuss. This image was focused on the three subjects with Joseph conveying hatred in his eyes and facial expression, Allen with a terrified look in his face, and Laurilyn with ignorance in her eyes as well. There wasn't too much I had to change about the picture because it was already what I was aiming for and a little goes a long way so I believe this was a successful image.
Analyze - The message of this photo is to portray how bullying comes in different forms and that anyone can be targeted at any time. Just because it's not someone you know that's being hurt, doesn't mean you shouldn't save them. Your voice could be the one to make a change and I believe that I conveyed this message immensely. With Joseph portraying physical bullying and Laurilyn with cyber-bullying, this is a rough topic that should have more attention towards.
Judgement - My photo could've been more straight forward because it might've been more confusing than what I was aiming for but the overall picture was successful due to the message it gave.

Reflection: Self Portrait
Describe - This photo is a portrait of myself, Frances Sarao at Seaport Village which was taken by Khadija Mcrae-Pierre.
Interpret - For this assignment, the focus was on the main subject, myself, so the background was more blurred compared to everything else in this photo. I wanted to give it a more old fashioned and vintage type of look so I used the filter named "antique" and burned the edges of the picture so it conveys an even stronger message.
Analyze - The message of this image is that in order to be elegant and classy, you must be confident in your own skin. Beauty lies within skin deep and there's always going to be someone better than you but they can never be YOU. Accepting yourself with your flaws and loving yourself completely is the best kind of love you can provide. As said before by Julie Andrews, "A queen is never late, everyone else is simply early"
Judgement - This assignment not only made me think deeper into the picture emotionally but it conveyed a message that almost anyone can relate to and I believe that I succeeded in this one.

Reflection: Fashion Collage
Describe - This is a photo collage of various fashion styles that everyday people in SCPA wear. Wearing a light pink long sleeved blouse and baby blue skirt with jet black shoes is Brianna. As for another portion of light pink, the skirt with black and white polka dots is worn by Joyce Rocacorba. For a more urban vibe, Destiny Turner pulls on a big red crew neck sweater with "The Notorious BIG" on the center that contrasts the red and black plaid flannel that Alvin Phiavongsa wears over his gray sweater which have roses on the center to add a twist. For a more futuristic look, Laurilyn V wears a black ban-due under a sheer black flowy top that has galaxy patterns everywhere which she uses to add floral shorts to obtain a pattern on pattern style. In addition to the darker side of fashion, Karin is wearing a black crop top turtle with a shade of mocha colored high wasted shorts and to top it all off she pulls on a black and white varsity jacket which she scrunches on the sleeves along with pure white sandals. Lastly, Kassandra Espinoza portrays a more casual look with her brown buckled boots and blue denim jeans. As shown, I took shots of their shoes and clothes to portray the different types of identities that impact the identity fashion provides individuals.
Interpret - For this assignment, I didn't have to change the background because I wanted the shots to have a plain background to emphasize the clothing and shoes more than what's behind it. The lighting was exceptional for majority of the pictures, however, I had to adjust the brightness and contrast to focus on the main subject for other pictures that didn't quite focus on the subject. The bottom right corner had barely any lighting so it looks a bit dark or dull but in a way that's what I was aiming for since his clothing portrays a more gloomy effect with the color schemes and patterns.
Analyze - This photograph has a strong message because it conveys that fashion gives you the freedom to express your art and the way you chose to portray the way you put your clothes and shoes together is endless. That's the thing about fashion, it isn't the safest but when you take a risk and do something out of the ordinary, you create something different and diverse. I believe that I accomplished my goal of having this message out to the viewers.
Judgement - Overall, this assignment was not only successful but fun as well because with trends these days, nothing ever really catches your eye anymore since they all look the same but I got a handful that contrasts each other and in the end it made something beautiful.

Reflection: Photo Illustration
Describe - This is a photo of Cynthia in black and white hanging out from a detailed art tree that remains in color as well as the background. As a whole, this image gives off a more ominous or strange vibe due to the way she is positioned along with the black and white effect showing that she is not a usual part of the setting. Since everything else is in bright colors along with the uplifting and vibrant nature scene, Cynthia adds an interesting twist to how we all see the world and it's message.
Interpret - For this photo, I didn't change anything about the background because everything was already vibrant itself. The most work I put into the image was on Cynthia because it was quite difficult trying to get her onto the tree in a specific angle. Since she was hanging from a table when I took the picture, I had to crop her body out of it so I used lasso tool for a majority of her body but it was difficult trying to crop out her hair out to where the background wouldn't be so visible. Afterwards, I went to adjustments to set a superior range of black and white for the message I was trying to convey. The last step was to crop the picture which really made a difference because once I cropped half of her body out, there weren't any awkward spacings from the table. I copied and pasted her onto the tree and angled it to a specific position to make the image work.
Analyze - This photograph did have a strong message because it portrays how even in a world full of wanderlust and beauty, darkness also follows. There is no such thing as a perfect world and the reality of it involves the truth about life so it really depends on your perspective towards it. I believe that I achieved conveying this message to the viewers.
Judgement - Overall, this was a successful image because it contained everything I was going for and I delivered the message pretty well with a good range of black and white as well as contrasting colors.

Brush and Font
Reflection: CD Cover
Describe - In this CD album cover, there isn't much black and white, rather entirely consisting of various shades of green with dark brown branches for a nature vibe. The text reads "Childish Gambino, Camp" to emphasize the album theme and the focal point would be the different types of trees rather than my dad who appears to be walking away in the image. It would've been simpler to just capture a photo of tress but I wanted to reveal more of Gambino's message so that's why I had my dad become a representer of Gambino after summer camp.
Analyze - The photograph is organized in a way that the man is only on a third of the photo. With that being said, the vibrant colors balance themselves out with the dark and ominous branches to draw more attention on nature which is the main point in this image. The photo is not completely focused on my dad because there isn't supposed to be a lot of emphasis on him, rather to emphasize part of the message the album provides.
Interpret - When asked to create a CD Cover and use photoshop to emphasize the meaning behind the album, adjusting the contrast and adding a tint of filter really helped strengthen the message of how the artist, Childish Gambino also known as Donald Glover, felt about the whole album and the process of making it. He starts his album off with an eye opening song called "Outside" which provides a raw insight or confession on how he lost his cousin to the streets ("She don't want me in a lifestyle like my cousin/And he mad cause his father ain't around/He lookin' at me now, like 'Why you so fuckin lucky?/I had a father too/But he ain't around so i'mma take it out on you...). With that, he reveals his whole aesthetic of young, angry, and full of regrets. However, he takes a different aspect on a song called "Heartbeat" which utilizes a more electro beat through musical development that emphasize how contrasting his album can be in dimension. He ends this album with "That Power" which reveals his first experience at heartbreak after summer camp ended. Looking back on that pain at a young age, he expresses "I wish I could say this was a story about how I got on the bus a boy and got off a man more cynical, hardened, and mature and shit. But that's not true. The truth is i got on the bus a boy. And I never got off the bus. I still haven't."
Judgement - I enjoyed this project and I believe that my photo was successful because it conveyed both the message along with interpretation of the original album.

Reflection: Portrait
1.) This is a photograph of a male (Sam Askew) standing behind a female (Sarah Wash) looking different directions.
2.) An emotional appeal it has on me is the sense of obliviousness from Sarah and suspense from Sam.
3.) There was no cropping needed to support the message in this photograph.
4.) This image has a good range of black and white with a touch of color from Sam.
5.) The image needs more focus on Sarah being oblivious rather than Sam because he already gives off an intense message.
6.) The main focal point is on the center of the photograph.
7.) The artist is trying to communicate with the emotions both people had and the contrast of intensity and softness.
8.) Yes, I believe that this photograph had a strong message.
9.) The aspects of the fair share in black and white with color.
10.) If the image had more white than darkness, it would've strengthened the message Sarah was trying to portray.
11.) If Sam's coat was a lighter shade, his head wouldn't look like it was floating in the photograph.

1.) This is a photograph Laurilyn V. on a couch with a more cozy appearance
2.) An emotional appeal this photograph has on me is that it has a sense of playfulness, comfort, and peacefulness.
3.) The cropping of this photo supported the message of the image because it showed that it was aligned and straightforward just like the message.
4.) This image has a good range of black and white especially with her thigh high socks and hair.
5.) The image needs a bit more focused information.
6.) The main focal point is in the middle of the page.
7.) The artist is trying to communicate with the audience by providing a sense of comfort and serenity.

Lasso Tool: M&M Cookies
Reflection
1.) It's a photograph of multiple M&M cookies that had a plate before and had a blank background afterwards.
2.) The only emotional impact it had on me was towards my stomach because it made me hungry.
3.) Enlarging the image made more of an impact towards the photograph rather than cropping.
4.) The image does not have a range from black to white because it is pure color other than the background from the first image that had a shadow.
5.) The image could use more focused information on the cookies.
6.) The main focal point is in the middle of the page.
7.) The artist is trying to portray a variety of colors through the various cookies on the plate, providing a sense of childhood.
8.) The photograph does not have that strong of a message.
9.) The focus on the cookies rather than the background led me to that conclusion.
10.) Better quality and improving the lasso tool so it wouldn't show the blue lines from the plate around the edges of the cookies as well as reshaping them could help strengthen this message.
11.) Similar to the qualities listed above would make the image more successful.

2.) Did the photograph have an emotional impact on you when you looked at it? What type of emotions does the image create?
- The image conveyed an emotional impact of tenderness and enchantment
3.) Does cropping support the message of the image or are there objects in the image that are confusing?
- Yes, however, there were minor objects that made it confusing which were the single flower on the bottom and the bottom half of the bush where it had a dark opening.
4.) Does the image have a good range of values from black and white?
- Yes, especially since her attire was already somewhat white
5.) Does the depth of field help to support the idea or does the image need more or less focused information?

- It is composed using the rule of thirds
7.) Do you think the photograph has a strong message?
- Yes
8.) What aspects of the photograph led you to that conclusion?
- The background, because while many would look directly at the ballet foot on pointe, the bush being more focused compared to the foot expresses that beauty people think they want to see may be the one distraction from looking into the broader picture and beauty from within.
9.) What changes help you strengthen the message?
- Placing the focus on the background rather than on the center
10.) What changes can you make if not, and if it is successful what is making the image work?
- Changes in the location and focusing just a little more on the focal point

3.) Does cropping support the message of the image, or are there objects in the image that are confusing?
- Cropping supported the message of the image
4.) Does the image have a good range of values from black to white?
- Yes
5.) Does the depth of field help to support the idea or does the image need more or less focused information?

Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO: Questions
1.) Can shutter speed get rid of blur in pictures taken with film cameras? If so, is it the only way to get rid of blur?
- No. While shutter speed can create an effect called motion blur where the photographer intentionally uses slow shutter speed; the blur in pictures taken with film cameras cannot be reduced or removed through shutter speed. A different way of getting rid of blur, however, is by using a tripod.
2.) Since a higher ISO causes more grain, is it possible to remove the grainy effect on the picture if you're aiming for a clearer quality?
- Yes. Increasing available light by using artificial light, off-camera flash, or strobe light is a stepping stone to remove the grainy effect on the picture. In addition, improving the gear by using a higher shutter speed and doing the post processing right can provide a clearer quality as long as it's not overdone.
3.) If you're taking a picture of a person or animal running or jumping, how much shutter speed would you need to capture the moment without having a blur?
- The required shutter speed depends on the speed of motion, potentially in addition to the stability of the moving object.
4.) Since you need at least a little bit of sunlight for brightness, would the picture turn out completely dark if it was taken in cloudy weather?
- No. While it'd be better to take pictures during the final hours of the afternoon, there are several techniques photographers may use to improve flat, boring, pictures on cloudy days. If you're left with dramatic dark skies, quickly expose the ambient sky and balance the strobe to bring up light to the subject. Moreover, if the subject is in shadier areas, place a small softbox high and behind them to emulate sunlight.
5.) Is the having the highest ISO a big impact on the quality of the picture? Does the digital noise determine how grainy the picture was?
- Yes, because having the highest ISO means the more sensitive it becomes. By choosing the lowest ISO possible, the shots will turn out smooth and grain-free. Moreover, by increasing the ISO, the more "noise" or "grain" in the shots increase which results in dull and hard to see pictures.

List of Functions
Aperture - Wider means more light for a shallow depth-of-field in which you would use a low f-stop (f/3.5 - f/5.6)
Lower means less light for a full depth-of-field in which you would use a high f-stop (f/18 - f/22)
Shutter Speed - Fast means little to no blur using a small fraction (1/800 or 1/1000)
Slow means more blur using a larger fraction (1/60 or 1/80)
ISO - For a brighter picture, use the high ISO which contains more digital noise and a higher ISO number. (1600 or 3200)
For a darker picture, use the low ISO which contains less digital noise and a lower ISO number. (100 or 200)

Reflection
- What does it look like? Who or what is in the photograph?
It looks like a photograph of a very happy girl known as Laurilyn V.H.
- Did the Photograph have an emotional impact on you when you looked at it? What type of emotions do the image create?
The photograph had an emotional impact on me in which made me feel joyful and content.
- Does cropping support the message of the image, or are there objects in the image that are confusing?
The cropping supported the message of the image because it shows her emotions in that still moment. However, some minor objects that caused confusion were the shadows from the subject and the wall.
- Does the image have a good range of values from black to white?
Yes, it varies from black to white to different shades of gray.
- Does the depth of field help to support the idea, or does the image need more or less information?
The image is already simple as it is and that's equivalent to the message, however, it could use a bit more information.
- Is the image composed using the rule of thirds, or is the main focal point in the middle of the page?
Since Laurilyn looking into the camera is in the middle of the page, that's where my main focal point lands.
- Do you think the photograph has a strong message?
Yes, the photograph may be simple but it explains much more than what appears to be on the photograph.
- What aspects of the photograph led you to that conclusion?
Her smile and the background.
- What changes could help strengthen the message?
If she held a happy face mask but only showed half of it and behind that mask revealed a more resentment look in her face
- What changes would you make if not, and if it is successful what is making the image work?
I would focus the picture much more and find a location with a completely different type of lighting for the photograph.

Photography History 09/17/14
On 1827, Joseph Nicephore Niepce took the first photography, his process took about eight hours and still ended up looking fuzzy. Despite the struggle, Niepce invented photography by coating a pewter plate with the same solution from his previous experiments. then placed the plate into a camera that was facing upwards from a window. After eight hours of exposure, the plate was washed out with a mixture of oil lavender and white petroleum which dissolved away the parts of the bitumen that hadn't been hardened by light. Therefore, the result was a permanent direct positive picture that landscapes the view from the window. Because photography had the ability to record visual data better then artists could, artists started emphasizing their own version of reality. For example, impression emphasized light and color along with its form and photomicrography which influenced painters such as Paul Klee to experiment with naturalistic abstraction through instruments that magnify images. Moreover, an SLR camera has a slanted mirror inside of it so that the image bounces off the lower mirror on to the translucent glass, which serves as a projection screen. In conclusion, by doing so the prism flips the screen so that the image appears to be right side up and redirects its viewfinder to the window.
